Environmental Service Centers

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department provides Houston residents with a safe and convenient place to dispose of household hazardous waste and select recyclable materials that should not be placed in regular trash or curbside collection.

Chemical Waste
  • Acids, Aerosol Cans, Degreasers, Fertilizers, Herbicides, Household Chemicals, Pesticide
100 lbs total combined weight per visit. (Not bagged.)
Automotive & Fluids
  • Antifreeze, Brake Fluid, Cooking Oil, Drain Cleaners, Kerosene, Motor Oil, Power Steering Fluid, Solvents, Transmission Fluid, Varnishes
25 quarts Maximum
  • Paints (Latex & Oil Base)
    25 gallons Maximum.
  • Paint Stains/Thinners
    25 gallons Maximum.
  • Fuels
    15 gallons maximum. (Note: The Environmental Center does not pour gas; gas cans must remain at the center or be poured into clean buckets with lids prior to arrival).
Electronic Waste
  • Computer Equipment & Components, Monitors, Printers, TVs, Small Electrical Appliances
A total of 5 large electronic items combined per visit. (5 PCs (+) 2 TVs 30" limit.)
  • Electronic Scrap, Telephone Equipment
    No maximum limit.
Other Household Items
  • Car Waxes
    No maximum limit.
  • Batteries
    Lithium Ion & Rechargeable only.
  • Fluorescent Bulbs
    Max 10(4-ft bulbs) and 6 (8-ft bulbs).
  • Helium and Propane Tanks
    5 gallon tank maximum
  • Lawn Equipment
    Accepted (All fluids must be completely removed).
  • Mercury, Metal Polish, Thermostats
    Must not be broken
  • Metal/Wire Clothes Hangers
    Must be free of paper backing.
  • Microwaves
    2 microwaves per visit
  • Pool Chemicals
    Cannot be wet
  • Tires
    5 tires per residence, per month (No commercial vehicle tires).

PROOF OF ADDRESS REQUIREMENTS

To drop off bulk waste or tree waste, residents must show:

  • A current Texas-issued ID (Driver’s License, DPS ID, LTC, or Consulate ID)
  • A current City of Houston utility bill or lease agreement
    NOTE: The address on both documents must match.

For residents whose primary home is outside Texas, a current property tax bill is required (name must match the ID).

For recycling only: A current Texas-issued ID is sufficient.
