About The Department

We keep Houston clean, safe, and livable by providing integrated municipal waste services that protect public health, advance sustainability, and strengthen every neighborhood. Our work is guided by the values of Fairness, Accountability, Customer Service, Teamwork, and Safety.

We deliver weekly curbside garbage and yard waste collection with clear container and set‑out rules. We provide curbside recycling with preparation and accepted‑item guidelines, and scheduled heavy and bulk curbside collection for eligible addresses with placement and volume limits to keep neighborhoods tidy and prevent illegal dumping.

Beyond the curb, residents can use Residential Drop-Off and Recycling Centers at no cost with proof of residency, generally up to four visits per month under posted site rules. We also operate Environmental Service Centers for household hazardous waste and electronics, and the Reuse Warehouse for reusable building materials. For neighborhood cleanups, community groups can request Adopt‑a‑Container support.

  • Heavy Trash Collection (Tree Waste and Junk Waste): We provide scheduled curbside collection of heavy and bulky items for eligible residences, with item eligibility, placement and accessibility requirements, and volume limits to keep neighborhoods clean and safe.

  • Drop‑Off and Community Facilities: We operate Residential Drop-Off and Recycling Centers at no cost with proof of residency and visit limits, plus Environmental Service Centers for household hazardous waste and electronics, the Reuse Warehouse for reusable building materials, and Adopt‑a‑Container support for community cleanups.
