At-Large Position 4
About Council Member Alejandra Salinas
Alejandra Salinas is a third-generation Texan and nationally recognized attorney who is proud to call Houston home. Elected in December 2025, she is the first openly LGBTQ+ Latina ever elected to Houston City Council and the first Latina elected citywide in nearly 30 years. She is also the youngest member of City Council.
Born and raised in South Texas, Alejandra grew up in a family shaped by hard work, perseverance, and service to others. Her grandfather worked in the cotton fields before becoming a U.S. Air Force colonel, and her great-grandfather came to the U.S. in search of opportunity and built a life as a successful businessman and community leader.
As the eldest of three, Alejandra developed a strong sense of responsibility as her family navigated her mother’s battle with mental illness and addiction. Those experiences shaped her deep empathy for families facing similar challenges. Her father, a trial lawyer, also inspired her drive to advocate and fight for justice.
As a high school student, Alejandra organized a walkout and helped create a campus-wide forum for students to speak about federal immigration legislation that would affect families in her community. At the University of Texas, she became deeply involved in civic life, learning how to organize, listen, and build consensus. She completed her law degree at Boston College and later clerked for Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Alejandra moved to Houston in 2016 as a young attorney and quickly fell in love with the city. For nearly a decade, Alejandra has stood up for individuals and businesses in the courtroom. As a partner at Susman Godfrey, one of the nation’s top litigation firms, she helped protect Harris County elections, challenged discriminatory school policies, and secured over a billion dollars for authors and publishers whose books were unlawfully copied by an artificial intelligence company.
At times the only woman and youngest person in the room, Alejandra learned to get things done through conviction and collaboration — fighting for what’s right while bringing people together to solve problems. She has been named one of the National Diversity Council’s Top Women in Law, a Texas Rising Star by Thomson Reuters Super Lawyer, and a member of The Next Generation of Leading Lawyers by Lawdragon.
Now serving as an At-Large Houston City Council Member, Alejandra brings her lifetime of advocacy to stand up for all Houstonians. She is focused on the fundamentals of local government: safe neighborhoods, affordable and reliable city services, and strong infrastructure that prepares Houston for the future.
Outside of her professional work, Alejandra devotes time to mentorship and community organizations. She served on the board of Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the board of Second Mile Haiti, a non-profit that works to provide pre-natal and family care to mothers and families in Haiti.
Alejandra and her wife, Elizabeth, live in Montrose with their two dogs and are members of St. Philip Presbyterian Church.
