Office of Business Opportunity
External Affairs
The External Affairs team is dedicated to enhancing the visibility, reach, and presence of the Office of Business Opportunity (OBO) within the vibrant community of Houston. This division is instrumental in advancing OBO's mission by orchestrating a variety of strategic programs that foster the success of the city’s diverse workforce and bolster small businesses, irrespective of their certification status.
The functions within External Affairs encompass a broad range of activities, such as community outreach programs that engage local entrepreneurs, initiatives aimed at building partnerships with industry leaders, and advocacy for policies that support small business development. Each of these components plays a crucial role in nurturing an inclusive economic landscape where every entrepreneur can thrive.
- Business Development: OBO’s business development and capacity building programming aims to assist small business owners in all stages of development – from those in the startup phase to more established businesses who are ready for public and private sector contracting. All business development programs are free.
- Workforce Development: As part of the City of Houston’s workforce development efforts, OBO administers the Turnaround Houston Job & Readiness Fairs.
- OBO Solutions Center (OBOSC): The OBO Solutions Center assists more than 200 clients per month who inquire about business permits and licensing information, access to financial resources, various contracting opportunities, information about OBO programs and workshops, legal assistance and more.
