April 17, 2026 - Houston police have arrested a suspect charged in the fatal shooting of a man that occurred at 5330 North Braeswood Boulevard about 12:50 a.m. on December 7, 2025

Derruntaye Barnes, 20, is charged with murder in the 337th Criminal District Court. A booking photo of Barnes is attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Wendell Johnson, 26.

HPD Homicide Sergeant S. Jimenez and Detective C. Bowling reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at the above address and located a male with a gunshot wound. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported the male to an area hospital where doctors pronounced him deceased.

Officers learned the male was involved in a verbal altercation with three unknown male suspects that led to the shooting. The suspects fled in an unknown direction.

Further investigation identified Barnes as the suspect in this case. On Thursday (April 16), Barnes was arrested by the South Gessner Patrol Tactical Unit and booked in to the Harris County Jail.
