Investigation into Fatal Shooting Incident at 5400 Airline Drive
April 13, 2026 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by an HPD officer at 5400 Airline Drive about 1:10 a.m. on April 11.
The identity of the deceased male suspect is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Sergeant J. Greenhaw, who discharged his duty weapon, suffered minor injuries. He was sworn in as an officer in September 2009 and is assigned to the North Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Detectives H. Le and J. De La Torre reported:
An HPD sergeant observed a speeding vehicle traveling southbound on Airline Drive and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle pulled into a strip center at the above address and the driver (suspect) exited the vehicle. The suspect attempted to walk away and resisted as the sergeant tried to detain him. A struggle ensued and both individuals fell to the ground, where the suspect choked and struck the sergeant with an unknown object. The sergeant then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. The suspect fled on foot and was apprehended shortly after by responding officers. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported the suspect to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
