Mayor Whitmire Addresses ICE Shooting
"City of Houston Has Provided Important Evidence for Independent Investigation"

Houston, TX - July 14, 2026 - Today, Mayor John Whitmire asked Houstonians to continue showing compassion and support to the family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, as the City assists with an independent investigation into the fatal ICE shooting that claimed Salgado Araujo's life one week ago today.
Before Tuesday’s City Council public session, where more than 100 people signed up to speak, the mayor requested a moment of silence for Araujo and highlighted the key evidence the City has provided to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, including audio of the 9-1-1 call, Houston METRO bus camera footage, and resources supporting the investigation.
“The City is doing everything possible to assist with a thorough and independent investigation. District Attorney Sean Teare and Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz are meeting with the FBI’s regional director this afternoon,” Mayor Whitmire said. “Our hearts remain with the Salgado family during this difficult time. We also extend our prayers to the family of the young man who was shot and killed yesterday in Maine. The City comes together when we face challenges, and that is what we are doing today."
Along with the evidence provided to authorities today, Mayor Whitmire last week directed Chief Diaz to send letters to the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, affirming that all appropriate HPD resources will be made available to support the investigation into Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's fatal shooting by ICE agents on July 7, 2026.
