Smoke Alarms can Save Your Life

When working smoke alarms are present in your home, the risk of dying in a home fire is cut by 60 percent (Source: National Fire Protection Association).

Install an alarm in every bedroom, the hallway connecting each room, the living room, den and all other living areas.

At least one alarm should be installed on each floor of your home.

When mounting your smoke alarm to the wall or ceiling follow the manufacturer's instructions or use these tips as guides for proper location.

• Wall Mount: Place 4-12 inches from the ceiling
• Ceiling Mount: Place at least 4 inches from any wall
• High-Pitch Ceilings: Place 3 feet from highest point of ceiling

In order to provide added protection the Houston Fire Department recommends smoke alarms with a 10-year battery instead of those that require a new battery twice a year. These detectors contain lithium batteries which will last the life of the alarm.

Maintenance:
• Test your alarm every month by pressing and holding the “Test” button
• Vacuum the vents of the alarm at least once a year
• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
